5 Color Scheme Tips
When you’re first starting out, choosing a color scheme might feel like a lot to choose, but once you learn what looks and colors you enjoy, it can become simple and enjoyable. These tips are good ways to start the process and help with choosing a color scheme just for you.
Your Style
Think of the colors you enjoy and are drawn to. What color clothes do you usually wear? Are there places you can think of that made you feel at home? What were the color palettes of those areas, and are there similar colors you could incorporate in your home?
What’s most important when picking house colors is that you enjoy them. You are decorating a home for yourself, so how you feel about those colors is more important than a lot of advice.
Build Off Patterns
Typically people do not move into a house with no belongings. Think of the furniture, carpets, and even art that you already own and will use to fill the space. Do those pieces have colors your drawn to and could see being used more often? And if they are very bold colors, like bright reds and yellows, think of some of the subtle colors that could complement those.
When decorating a space, using the colors you already own can help you get started, but it doesn’t mean you have to monochromatic in your choices.
Dark to Light
Dark to Light in reference to house color schemes mean you start with the floor, usually the darkest color, then the walls, a more medium to light color, and then the ceiling will be the lightest. This is a great rule to get you started with picking colors when you’re new to the process.
It is similar to the 60-30-10 rule, which is also good to keep in mind. This means that 60% is the main color (usually the walls), 30% is for a secondary color (like furniture), and 10% is for accents, like smaller room decorations.
Order of Importance
When you start choosing a house color, it is recommended that you begin with the more “formal” rooms like the dining and living rooms as well as the entryway. Based on these bigger spaces, you can build the bedroom and study using slight color variations on your main scheme.
Safety in Neutrals
There are plenty of classic colors that you can lean on if you are unsure. Greys and blacks and browns are a good start. If you’re afraid of bold colors, work with what you know you like to begin, and then choose accents later to make the room pop.
Get Painting
Once you know the color scheme of your dreams, you’ll be well on your way to creating a space perfect for you. Choosing a color scheme should be fun and exciting instead of scary. Don’t be afraid of mistakes, and remember you can always test or repaint if it isn’t working.
